Coach Mike McFarlane: 2014 / 2015 Coach of the Year
On February 18, Coach Mike McFarlane was awarded the 2014 /2015 Coach of the Year. Coach Mike began his career with the Chiefs Hockey Club back in 2004, when he coached his son Liam’s team and continues today as the head coach for his daughter Murphy’s Peewee team. For the past 9 seasons, Coach Mike has been a great teacher. His vast knowledge of the game and endless amounts of patience have enabled him to teach complex skills and concepts to players of all ages and levels. His teams always improve over the course of a season as he is able to transfer his knowledge and passion for the game to his players.
Not only does Coach Mike work hard to teach his players basic hockey skills and concepts, he works hard to ensure that each player develops a passion for the game. He makes it a priority to have fun, and his teams can be heard singing a pre-game song or reciting his motto, “it’s a great day to be at the rink.” Regardless of the number of wins or losses, Coach Mike judges the success of a season by the overall improvement in each player’s skill level, but more importantly by how many kids are excited to return year after year.
Mikes contributions to the club and the game of hockey are not just limited to his commitment as a coach, he also donates his time and skills as the clubs Mite though Peewee hockey director and sits on the clubs board. In his role as a hockey director he has been responsible for recruiting and developing new coach’s and assistants, establishing the clubs Mite ADM program and organizing several coach’s round tables and clinics.
Mike has also been instrumental in establishing the clubs goaltender training program by securing equipment, recruiting goaltender coaches and establishing a regular Saturday morning clinic at which he acts as an instructor.
Coach Mike’s contributions to the Chiefs Hockey Club and youth hockey in Illinois are second to none. He is a tremendous asset to the game and our organization, and we are proud to honor him as our 2014 / 2015 Coach of the Year.
